The Prime Minister of Great Britain, Gordon Brown has outlined the Government's proposals for autism. The Prime Minister was in touch with British autism campaigner Ivan Corea, father of Charin, a 13 year old boy with autism spectrum disorder. This was history in the making - it was the first time that the Prime Minister has written over his plans for autism.

Parents and carers Ivan and Charika Corea have been campaigning long and hard on autism since 2000 with the Autism Awareness Campaign UK. They initiated 2002 as Autism Awareness Year supported by 800 UK organisations. In 2008 they launched a new autism charity - the UK Autism Foundation. The charity has been campaigning specifically on behalf of families with autism who are below the poverty line. Over 200 MPs have signed three early day motions backing the UK Autism Foundation's call for help for the poor. The EDMs were sponsored by John Battle MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Poverty, Rudi Vis MP and David Drew MP. They attracted all party support in the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown writing to Ivan Corea said:' We are determined that people with autism and their families get the support they need and deserve, and know that without it the condition can have a devastating impact.

We are improving the quality of services provided to adults with autism by:

- publishing good practice Commissioning Guidance for the NHS and local authorities in April;

- launching a consultation on a new national strategy for autism, with the final strategy to be published by the end of the year. The strategy has four main priorities: health, social inclusion (including employment), choice and control, and training. Part of the autism strategy will look at how young people can access appropriate placements, whether that is to study, to get a paid job or to access training. It will also consider how people can be supported to live in their communities and how their needs are addressed.

- issuing statutory guidance, subject to consultation and assessment of benefits. Implementation of the strategy will be driven regionally: led by the Government Offices for the Regions and through the Valuing People Now Regional Boards (for adults with autism who have a learning disability);

- the appointment of Elaine Hill, a national adviser on autism, last October to work with key stakeholders to shape priorities for the strategy;

- determining the best way to help local authorities and other agencies gather data, assess needs and commission services for adults with autism in their area; and

- funding a study on the prevalance of autism in adults, to commence later this year.

I hope you will agree that the action the Government is already taking and will take in the coming months will prove an effective way of delivering the outcomes we all wish to see for people with autism and their families,' said Prime Minister Gordon Brown in his letter to Ivan Corea from 10 Downing Street.

On the subject of the United Nations World Autism Awareness Day which was held on Thursday 2nd April, the Prime Minister said he would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff, supporters and volunteers in all of the organisations who have worked so hard to make World Autism Awareness Day a success.

Ivan Corea said: 'I am delighted with the Prime Minister's personal response on autism. This is the first time that Gordon Brown has written, outlining the Government's intended actions on autism. Her Majesty's Government has accomplished a great deal on autism but there is more work to be done. We really do need an end to the postcode lottery to public services - people are desperate for public services in education, health, specialist speech therapy and respite care. We need new streams of funding and the autism campaigner in the House of Commons, Lee Scott MP, has called for ring fenced funding for autism. We welcome the fact that the G20 London Summit focused on the world's poor. The UK Autism Foundation is campaigning specifically on behalf of the poor and we thank all those who supported our call to G20 leaders to reach out to the poor. We now urge Chancellor Alistair Darling to provide real financial support for families with autism in the April 2009 Budget - by increasing the tax credits, the disability living allowance and the carer's allowance. Things are desperate for many, many parents and carers. Fathers and mothers are losing their jobs, the homes of families with autism have been re-possessed by banks - we urge Gordon Brown to stop the re-possessions. Some families are suffering as a result of fuel poverty. Things could get worse if the recession deepens in 2009 and parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome will need more help and support to cope with life during this economic crisis.'

UKAF also supported Cheryl Gillan MP's Autism Bill which goes on to the next stage in the House of Commons.

The UK Autism Foundation was a partner of the historic United Nations World Autism Awareness Day. WAAD was launched by the United Nations General Assembly in New York on the 2nd of April 2008, on the recommendation of the State of Qatar. This year, 20 UK charities urged people to 'Stand Up for Autism,' on World Autism Awareness Day.

The United Nations World Autism Awareness Day takes place on Thursday 2nd April this year. UN WAAD will focus on over 60 million people with autism around the world.

The UK Autism Foundation is launching a fundraising drive to mark the United Nations World Autism Awareness Day. The charity spearheaded Autism Sunday which was celebrated around the world on 8th February.

The economic crisis has devastated the charity sector with a huge drop in charitable giving. The Foundation hopes that people will find it in their hearts to give and support the work of UKAF. The charity is lobbying and campaigning specifically on behalf of the poor.

The United Nations World Autism Awareness Day was launched last year by the UN General Assembly in New York on the recommendation of the State of Qatar. Last year Ivan Corea was interviewed by GMTV and CNN for the inaugural launch. The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the UN World Autism Awareness Day last year. Mr.Ban ki-moon said: 'As we advance the universal human rights of children with disabilities, let us focus on building enabling environments for them to prosper as future members of their communities, citizens of their countries and as fully-fledged members of the global community. Let us pay tribute to the courage of children with autism and their families, as they strive every day to confront the disability with a powerful combination of determination, creativity and hope. Let us empower them and respond to their needs today, so as to make our societies more accessible, enabling and empowering for all our children tomorrow. '

To mark UN World Autism Awareness Day 2009 on 2nd April - the UK Autism Foundation is now partnering with Justgiving.

Ivan Corea said: 'Individuals, schools, colleges, faith communities, companies can now raise funds in our local community and support the work of the UK Autism Foundation. The partnership with Justgiving is part of the UKAF's fundraising strategy. You can start up your own fundraising page on Justgiving for UKAF, or set up a page in memory of a loved one. We urge urge people to look at the following links and support the work of the UK Autism Foundation on World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD)':

President Obama has promised change and the change agenda needs to embrace the Autism Community. US autism advocates are calling on the 44th President of the United States to open up the White House and show that he is inclusive. They are calling for firm action on the issues concerning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

Autism Sunday is the first major date in the international calendar where autism is concerned - autism advocates are using the opportunity to campaign hard on the issues of healthcare and education urging President Obama to speak out on autism on 8th February.

Cathedrals, Churches and organisations are observing Autism Sunday around the world. Autism Sunday was launched in the United Kingdom in 2002. The focus is on celebrating the lives of children and adults with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

President Obama has promised to give autism top priority. The President is also extending his hand to parents and carers who struggle to cope with life.

The new White House website has featured autism:

President Obama and Vice President Biden are committed to supporting Americans with Autism Spectrum Disorders (“ASD”), their families, and their communities. There are a few key elements to their support, which are as follows:

* First, President Obama and Vice President Biden support increased funding for autism research, treatment, screenings, public awareness, and support services. There must be research of the treatments for, and the causes of, ASD.

* Second, President Obama and Vice President Biden support improving life-long services for people with ASD for treatments, interventions and services for both children and adults with ASD.

* Third, President Obama and Vice President Biden support funding the Combating Autism Act and working with Congress, parents and ASD experts to determine how to further improve federal and state programs for ASD.

* Fourth, President Obama and Vice President Biden support universal screening of all infants and re-screening for all two-year-olds, the age at which some conditions, including ASD, begin to appear. These screenings will be safe and secure, and available for every American that wants them. Screening is essential so that disabilities can be identified early enough for those children and families to get the supports and services they need.

All eyes are now on the President as we approach Autism Sunday.......

Autism Campaigners in the United States of America and around the world are calling on President Elect Barack Obama to to speak out on Autism Sunday - the International Day of Prayer for Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome which falls on 8th February 2009. President Elect Obama takes over the Office of the President of the United States in January. Autism Sunday would be the first international date in connection with the serious educational health issues concerning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Many parents, carers and people with autism are struggling to cope with life. In some countries in Africa and Asia there are hardly any public services.

Cathedrals, churches and religious organisations have been urged to observe Autism Sunday 2009 to pray for over 60 million people with autism. 1 in 150 children in the United States are on the autism spectrum. President Elect Obama has been urged to spell out his plans for autism on Autism Sunday 2009.

Autism Sunday was launched in 2002 in the United Kingdom by parents and carers Ivan and Charika Corea - they have a son with autism spectrum disorder. A historic service was held at St.Paul’s Cathedral in 2002 to mark Autism Sunday. Since then churches and religious groups around the world have been marking the International Day of Prayer for Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

Ivan Corea, Co-Founder of Autism Sunday, appealed to President Elect Barack Obama to speak out on Autism Sunday 2009. ‘We are urging world leaders and church leaders to speak out on autism on Autism Sunday. This is an opportunity for parents, carers and people with autism to campaign on the serious issues concerning autism. Many families with autism are suffering as a result of the economic downturn and the global recession. Many are in winter fuel poverty. They have to decide between heating and eating. Even in the United States and in the United Kingdom, homes belonging to families with autism have been re-possessed by banks. We call on world leaders including President Elect Barack Obama to speak out on autism.

A US based website Aspie Web.Net Blog has offered prayer suggestions for religious organisations in America - in support of Autism Sunday 2009. They include prayer ideas for the United States and Autism in general:

* Please pray that the Obama administration seek the advice of Autistic Individuals when developing strategies on Autism.
* Please pray that insurance companies be forced to cover scientifically proven therapies.
* Please pray for growing communication between Autism Self-Advocates and lawmakers.
* Please pray that needs of Autistic Individuals can be met in the slow economy.
* Please pray that lies that are harming the autistic community be squashed.
* Please pray for acceptance of the Autistic Community in the church, community, by employers, educational institutions and wherever they may go.

utism campaigners are urging world leaders and church leaders across the nations to speak out on autism on Autism Sunday, the International Day of Prayer for Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Autism Sunday takes
place on 8th February 2009.

World leaders and Church Leaders have been asked to reach out to parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Autism Sunday was initiated in 2002 Autism Awareness Year in the United Kingdom.

Churches and religious organisations have been asked to observe Autism Sunday and remember over 60 million people with autism in prayer. Many suffer without adequate public services. The economic downturn and the present financial crisis has put pressure on families with autism below the poverty line in many countries. Campaigners are also concerned that there are families with autism who are in winter fuel poverty.

Ivan Corea, Co-Founder of Autism Sunday said: 'I do believe that faith communities have a role to play where autism is concerned. We are appealing to world leaders and religious leaders to speak out on autism. Many are struggling because of the global recession. Faith communities can reach out to the poor and help them. They can also speak out against the re-possessions of homes belonging to families with autism. In Africa and Asia food bills have soared. Autism Sunday is an opportunity to campaign on autism and Asperger's Syndrome and speak out on the serious issues concerning the vulnerable.'

Autism Sunday, and the International Day of Prayer for Autism and Asperger's Syndrome falls on 10 February, when churches of all denominations will be remembering 60 million people with autism around the world, and more than 500,000 people with autism in the UK.

Ivan Corea, head of the Autism Awareness Campaign UK, who, together with his wife Charika initiated Autism Sunday in 2002, has urged churches to speak out on the suffering that parents, carers and people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome are going through as a result of not having the public services in education, health, specialist speech therapy and respite care they desperately need.

The campaign was launched in 2000 by the Corea Family, who have struggled to get support for their son Charin who will be 12 years old this year and has ASD.

It is now a huge movement - they initiated 2002 as Autism Awareness Year, supported by 800 UK organisations, and that year the first ever service for autism was held at St Paul's Cathedral in London - to mark the inauguration of Autism Sunday in the UK.

Ivan Corea said: "I believe faith communities have a huge role to play in reaching out to the socially excluded, the vulnerable and the downtrodden. I would urge churches to go out to the community and reach out to parents, carers and all people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome.

"Faith communities could provide befriending services, help families with autism who are struggling to cope with life and 'speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves.' We urge Church leaders of all denominations to back our call for a national strategy on autism and a 10-year plan for autism and Asperger's Syndrome,' he said.

Autism campaigners are calling on church leaders to take these matters up with the Prime Minister.

According to new research commissioned by the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, the annual cost of autism to the UK is just under £28 billion.

An appeal went out to church leaders, Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster and Joel Edwards, General Director of the Evangelical Alliance to 'speak out for those who cannot speak out for themselves' by raising the serious educational and health issues connected with autism and Asperger's Syndrome in the United Kingdom.

This appeal to church leaders in the UK went out on Autism Sunday - the International Day of Prayer for Autism and Asperger's Syndrome on 11th February 2007.

Campaigners are concerned about the lack of public services in education, health, specialist speech therapy and respite care for the 535,000 people with autism in the UK; the failure of the secondary school system in dealing with educational strategies; bullying; campaigners have called on the Prime Minister Tony Blair to launch a 10 year program of building specialist autism schools for all and autism unnits/sensory rooms in secondary schools.

Last year Sir Al Aynsely-Green, the Children's Commissioner in the UK said:

'It's appalling and it's shameful for our country, the fifth richest economy in the world, to have so many (autistic) children that are not being looked after and given the resources they need to develop to their full potential.'

A recent UNICEF Report placed the United Kingdom at the bottom of a league table in terms of children's well being. Autistic children are at the 'bottom of the bottom of the pile' according to campaigners.

Baroness Blatch, former Education Minister attended the service.

The event was highlighted on press, radio and television in the United Kingdom.

Vernon Corea's Prayers for Autism

Vernon Corea (1927 - 2002) was a pioneering broadcaster with Radio Ceylon/SLBC and the BBC. He was the BBC's Ethnic Minorities Advisor in the late 1970s-1980s. His grandson was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in the United Kingdom. Vernon Corea fully supported the Autism Awareness Campaign.

He was present at the first ever service for autism at St.Paul's Cathedral in London in 2002 Autism Awareness Year. He was also a Lay Reader at Emmanuel Church in Wimbledon, South West London and at Christ Church Gipsy Hill in South East London. Vernon Corea was a frequent guest on 'Thought For the Day' on BBC Radio 2.

He wrote these prayers remembering people with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome all over the world.

Autism is on the rise in the United Kingdom and across the world, it is now a serious health and education issue facing our nation.

A Prayer for the Autistic Community

Gracious Father,
Thank you for giving us your Son
To teach us and forgive us.
He suffered and died for us,
And while he was on this earth
He healed the sick
And touched the lives
Of everyone.

We now commit the lives
Of all autistic people in our nation
Into Your loving care.
We ask you to lay Your hands on them
And give them Your peace.
Give them the power of the Holy Spirit
To make them whole.
In Jesus Name, Amen.

From a Child -

Jesus,
Thank you
That you are there for me
There are many things I'd like to do better-
Like speaking and writing.
I ask you to help me.
You have already helped me in many ways.
Sometimes I see the world in pictures -
I like to draw, to watch TV.
I like to do many more things,
Which I can't do.
So please lay your hands on me
And bless me.
Be with me Lord Jesus
At home and in school.

Thank you for my parents, my family,
My teachers and support workers
And all those who are helping me.
Thank you Jesus, Amen.

Autism is a neuro developmental disorder, it is a lifelong disability, people with autism have a triad of impairements - social interaction, social communication and imagination.

There are those who have seen the classic film, the 'Rain Man' with Dustin Hoffman and Tome Cruise. The film focuses on the character played so brilliantly by Dustin Hofman - an 'Autistic Savant' who is gifted in mathematics. But this is only one aspect of autism.

Autism is a very large spectrum. Not everyone is blessed with the gift of Mathematics, Art or Creativity. There are those who are mildly autistic, others are very severe. Some autistic people who are high functioning autists have the gift of speech others don't talk at all. There are autistic children who have communication disorders - they need help and support - these children need specialist speech therapy.

Autism is a neuro developmental disorder, it is a lifelong disability, people with autism have a triad of impairements - social interaction, social communication and imagination.

Common Characteristics of Autism

Autistic children and adults may or may not have speech, quite often the speech is delayed, they make non-speech sounds (e.g. mmmmmm) echolalia - mimicing words without understanding what the word means - they may mimic words from the TV for example.)

Lack of eye contact, they appear to be unaware of people around them, no real interaction with peers - in the classroom or at home, sometimes they treat people as objects, parallel play rather than playing with children, sometimes lack of imaginative play.

They don't like being cuddled or being picked up, hand movements, flapping of hands especially when they are over stimulated or particularly excited about something, spinning, balancing, sometimes they might tiptoe when walking, repetitive behaviour - they might re-wind a video and watch it several times - over and over again, lining up things like toys, self-injury - some children bang their head on the wall, they do not like a change of routine.

Autistic children and adults don't like being touched, they might not like certain textures or sounds, they might cover their ears at very loud noises, they tend to blank out certain things, they appear to be uncomfortable at very extreme temperatures, they are either very passive or very active sometimes even hyperactive.

Some autistic children and adults love drawing, some can be musical, like numbers - mathematics, good memory, skilled at using computers, computer games, using complex video/audio equipment around the house or in the office or in school.

Autistic children and adults may get up several times in the night - parents suffer from sleep deprivation. Serotonin levels may be high, some children suffer epilepsy, others may have dyslexia, dyspraxia. Many children suffer from bowel problems - there seems to be a connection between a leaky gut and autism. Some may suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

What are the Causes of Autism?

Scientists are still divided as to the causes of autism. Parents, Carers and Autists have not been given a definite answer whether autism has been caused by the MMR vaccination, whether there is a genetic disposition, whether it is caused by foetal distress at birth or whether environmental factors play a role where Autism is concerned. We need answers. We also need public services in health, education, respite care and specialist speech therapy for all people with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome.
